While you’d certainly be forgiven for not knowing what it means, the term ‘Gorpcore’ has actually been around since 2017. Simply put, ‘Gorpcore’ refers to the trend of wearing technical clothing and outdoor wear as everyday street style. So although you may not have known it by name, you’d have certainly witnessed a noticeable shift in street style with a greater emphasis on key outerwear brands and pieces.
So what does the name actually mean? It’s actually an acronym for the common hikers trail mix of ‘good ol’ raisins and peanuts’ (GORP). The name, which follows on from the ‘normcore’ trend of a few years prior, acknowledges the activity based (whether it’s hiking, skiing or even running) origins of the brands and styles that now dominate this much loved trend. One of the great things about the trend is it's easy to wear nature, there are no set rules and as a result, you can embrace the look in a variety of different ways. This could mean adding a simple gilet to your look or switching out formal shoes in favour of a much more functional trail shoe.
Here at the 5th, there’s plenty of brands to choose from to help you achieve that Gorpcore look. With its origins in skiwear, Japanese brand Goldwin is a great place to start. The Mobility Packable Jacket in light indigo is the perfect example of how to embrace outerwear trends when the weather is that little bit warmer. It also has all the functional hallmarks of typical Gorpcore wears from storm flaps to adjustable snap cuffs. Fashion with function is a major part of Gorpcore’s appeal, with the cost of living going up consumers expect more from their clothing than just a good aesthetic.
And Wander is yet another example of a Japanese outdoor wear brand that’s achieved somewhat cult status among Gorpcore enthusiasts. This is thanks to the brand’s attention to detail when it comes to materials and their ability to stay true to their initial aim to bring the sensibilities of fashion to the outdoors. Coats and jackets are probably what first springs to mind whenever someone mentions technical materials, but the Gorpcore trend encourages us to consider the entirety of the outfit. With this in mind, we’re loving and Wander’s Breath Rip Short Pants which are constructed from a ripstop fabric that is durable, breathable and highly water-resistant.
If you’re not ready to fully embrace a particular trend, accessories are a great way of dipping your toe in. Second only to a classic utility backpack, the side bag is the ultimate Gorpcore accessory. Best worn under your jacket or coat, this lightweight Sil Secret Bag from and Wander is the ideal size for valuables such as passports or phones. Like pretty much everything at and Wander, this too is constructed from a highly water repellent fabric.
